Bitgiant Webhosting - Frequently asked Questions

Domain Names (9)

– What is a Domain Name?

A domain is your identity online. It separates you from everybody else. Once it’s yours, as long as you keep on renewing it, nobody else can have it.

There are two parts to a domain – the domain name itself, and the TLD (top level domain) extension.

The most common TLD is the .com extension as it is synonymous with online business, however due to its popularity, getting a good domain name with ‘.com’ extension is hard. Most have been purchased and are not available.

Most TLDs have a meaning behind them – .EDUs are used by educational institutes, and .ORGs are supposed to be used by non-profit organizations. A domain with a TLD of ‘co.nz’ is very likely New Zealand based. There are other TLDs too, such as .cc, .tv, and .tk. These are all associated with either a company or with a country.

Bitgiant will register a domain for you if you do not have one (it must be available though).

For most domains, the minimum registration duration is one year. Some TLDs such as .US require a minimum of two years. However, most TLDs only require a one year commitment. A .COM domain will cost you around $11 per year which is very cheap when you think about having your own online identity.

The information related to you when buying a domain is publicly available. It is illegal to put in false information, so your personal information can be traced back. When you register a domain name through Bitgiant, we offer you the ability for a “WHOIS ID Protection” service. This stops the general public from being able to view your personal details such as address and telephone number is this is of a concern to you.

Once you have registered a domain, as long as you remember to keep renewing it, no one will be able to take the domain. You may sell the domain to someone else (or even buy somebody else’s domain), but no one will be able to just take the domain.

Having your own domain is very important for your business. It sets you apart from everybody else, and gives you a brand to work with.

– How do I register a Domain Name?

Registering a domain name is very easy.

First you will have to make sure that the domain name that you want is available – using something called a WHOIS lookup and you can do this here https://bitgiant.net/client/domainchecker.php

If the domain name you want is available, you will be able to purchase it right away where you can also choose to purchase a hosting plan or add the new domain to your current hosting plan with us. Additional services are also available to register at the time such as ID Protect.

– When I register a domain name, who will have ownership of it?

When you register a domain name with BitGiant, you will have full ownership of your domain name. This means that you can move your domain name somewhere else or modify it however you want. You have full control over your domain name.

– How long does it take before my domain name is active?

Once your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 12-24 hours to be active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site’s location.

– Will there be any downtime in transferring my domain name registration to BitGiant?

There is no downtime associated with transferring your domain name registration to BitGiant. Once the domain is transferred you may wish to change the DNS on your domain to point to our name servers. If you do change your DNS servers, this can introduce downtime of up to 24 hours.

– How long does it take for the DNS to update?

From the time you change the DNS on your domain name to point to our name servers it will take approximately 12-24 hours for the change to propagate throughout the Internet and become active. During this time your website may be down until the change has fully propagated through the Internet.

– What is your DNS information?

The following is BitGiant’s DNS information. You can use this when registering a new domain name or modifying an existing domain name.

E-Commerce (3)

– What is E-Commerce?

E-commerce (electronic commerce) is the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet. In practice, this term and a newer term, e-business, are often used interchangeably. For online retail selling, the term e-tailing is sometimes used.

BitGiant offers a range of free and paid applications and shopping carts and all with simple one click installs directly from your control panel!

– What is a Shopping Cart?

On a website that sells products or services online, the shopping cart is a common metaphor (from the original grocery store shopping cart) for the catalog or other pages where a user reads and makes selections. Typically, the user checks off any products or services that are being ordered and when finished ordering, “Checks Out” by proceeding to a page where the various information such as billing and shipping information is collected and the order is placed and confirmed. The programming that provides a website with the ability to build a catalog, build its associated database and integrate pages into the website that provide users the ability to shop is known as shopping cart software.

A primary consideration when choosing shopping cart software is whether it will continue to serve your needs as your catalog and volume of orders grow. Our hosting plans include numerous shopping cart options that are easily installed straight from your control panel. Here are a few of our most popular, listed in order of popularity – Magento, Zen Cart, osCommerce, and Cube Cart.

– What is SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)?

The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a commonly used protocol for managing the security of a message transmission on the Internet.

SSL is an integral part of most Web browsers (clients) and Web servers. If a website is on a server that supports SSL, SSL can be enabled and specific Web pages can be identified as requiring SSL access.

So in simpler terms, with an SSL Web Server Certificate on your website, any information sent to your Web server is encrypted or scrambled, making it impossible to intercept or steal. It also displays the identity of the website owner, and the name of the independent authority who verified that identity, such as GeoTrust.

Securing the transmission of information to your business holds obvious benefits, as does signifying that you are a trustworthy online organization. SSL Web Server Certificate protects against password and information interception, ensuring that your online relationship with your clients will be one based on trust.

If you do need a branded SSL address, then we can help you. Installations will cost you between $10 to $30 depending on the type of certificate. Please contact us for more information.

Web Hosting (16)

– What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is the act of renting server space and bandwidth through a webhost such as BitGiant, so that you can publish your website online.

Hosting your website is not all you can do with a web hosting plan. You can setup email professional email addresses such as yourname@yourdomain.com, setup FTP file transfer services and run ecommerce sites with a number of different ecart and online shopping solutions to name a few.

Any business serious about being competitive should have web hosting and use the internet to promote their products and services.

– Can I have more than one hosting plan?

Yes! You can open as many hosting plans as you wish. All of your hosting plans are listed in your client area.

– How do I upload my site online?

Uploading your site can be done in many ways, but the most popular and recommended method is FTP.

When your hosting account is created, you would have been provided with your FTP account details. These can also be created in your Control Panel and you can view tutorials on managing your FTP accounts at our video tutorial site. Using software such as Filezilla which we highly recommend, you can log into the folders and files hosted inside your plan. Then, using the program like a normal windows program, you can drag and drop files between the server and your computer. These files become live online instantaneously.

There are other ways to upload your site such as using SSH or uploading files through your control panel online which is very simple.

We are also happy to help at no cost, with any new customers who wish to upload their site.

– What exactly is diskspace and bandwidth/data transfer?

Diskspace is the size your website and other files stored on our server can be. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on our servers. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but it is the extra images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space. Please contact us if you have any pre purchase questions about your requirements. Most entry level websites can stay well under the limits of our basic Baby Giant plan.

Bandwidth/Transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site and hosting plan to send and receive in a month. Transfer is usually measured in gigabytes (billions of bytes). As you get close to your monthly limit we will send you several emails advising you of the usage and give you a chance to purchase another block of bandwidth for that month or upgrade to the next plan. We will also look into the increase of traffic and advise you how to view your statistics and monitor where your traffic is coming from. We will NEVER charge you if you go over your allotted usage. We will simply warn you to purchase another block of bandwidth of your choice or to upgrade. If you ignore the emails you will simply be suspended until the next billing month. We prefer however, to monitor traffic and are very lenient to our new customers who may have purchased a plan size that is too small for their requirements.

– How can I pay for my web hosting plan?

We accept all major credit cards through our highly secure and popular online merchant 2co, and also offer payment through the worlds favourite payment gateway PayPal

– How long does it take to set up a new account?

New accounts are guaranteed to be set up within 24 hours (usually 4 hours) from the time we receive your order. Once an account is set up an activation notice will be sent to your e-mail address including your account information. You can begin uploading files to your new website immediately. You will be given a temporary web address to access the site prior to the completion of either domain registration or domain transfer so you can start working with your account right away.

– Can I add software to my account?

Yes. You have complete control over all aspects of your account, including the installation of software. If you install software not included in your hosting plan, we cannot guarantee its functionality and it will not be supported by our technical support staff. However, because we offer support for Perl, PHP, MySQL, and other programming languages, you have very few limitations when it comes to which software you can install. Most popular software however, is easily installed through the one click install applications we offer to you in your control panel.

– Can I upgrade my plan if I need to?

Yes. You can upgrade your plan at anytime. You will pay the difference between your current plan and your new plan. There are no extra fees involved in upgrading. You can upgrade your account by logging into your control panel.

– How do I track how many hits my website gets?

There are a few things that need to be cleared in terms of terminology:

  • Hits – this simply refers to the number of ‘elements’ loaded on your site. If one page has five images in it, viewing that page once adds 6 hits (one page + five images).
  • Impressions – the number of times all the pages on your site are seen (also simply called pageviews). Impressions are sometimes referred to as ‘hits’ which can cause confusion
  • Uniques – the number of people that visited your site

So to clarify, if somebody visits your website, looks at two pages, and each page has 5 images on it, then your stats increase by one unique, two page views, and 12 hits.

We provide several tracking tools, the best and most accurate being AWStats

We also highly recommend implementing Google Analytics into your site, which is free of course and is something we are happy to assist you with. Check out Google Analytics, a 100% free way to track hits and other userful information about your where your users come from, browser info, screen size and other powerful data.

– Will I have unlimited access to update and make changes to my pages?

Yes, you have unlimited access via FTP and the Web-based File Manager 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your website at your leisure.

– What are subdomains?

Think of a subdomain as an extension of your domain. For example, your site is www.example.com. A subdomain would be test.example.com, and another would be webhosting.example.com.

Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main domain site.

– What type of websites are not allowed to be hosted?

Any websites which are illegal, contain copyrighted files (warez), adult content, spamming scripts, web proxies etc. Please read our TOS before sign-up.

– What is PHP, ASP, perl, etc?

These are programming languages which are referred to by their acronyms.

PHP – PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor
ASP – Active Server Pages
Perl – not an acronym

Each programming language has its own benefits and uses. It is best that you research on your own to find one that best fits your needs or contact us for more information.

– What is SEO?

SEO is abbreviated for Search Engine Optimization, which is the practice of optimizing a website in order to achieve traffic from search engines.

– Why don’t I just go with the cheapest hosting?

A webhost has to make a profit to continue operating. Some hosts do not properly understand the market, and may be pricing themselves too cheap. These hosts are usually overloading their servers and cannot accommodate the support related queries their customers throw at them.

The age old question rings true here. Do you want a good product, or a cheap one?

Business is money, and having your site perform well is essential to ensuring your customers can always reach your site and have it load quickly.

– My host offers unlimited bandwidth/space/transfer

This is a scam! It is not possible for a web host to offer ‘unlimited’ bandwidth or disk space.  Such hosting plans always come with clauses that restrict how much bandwidth you can transfer at a given moment, how much CPU usage you can use (which is arbitrarily decided), and so forth.

Stay well clear of any hosts offering you unlimited plans as you will pay for it in the long run with terrible performance, security, service and overall cost to your business.

We recommend you visit UnlimBand for more details.
